It is April, which means it is Autism Awareness Month!

Although usually celebrated on April 2nd, Autism is celebrated throughout the month of April to promote inclusivity, support, and research for autism. But, what is autism?

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder, is a broad range of conditions in the brain that affects social interactions and patterns of behavior. Usually affecting 1 in 31 children and 1 in 45 adults in the United States, symptoms develop within the first two years of life but can go undiagnosed for a long period of time.

Autistic people may have trouble with understanding communication, whether it’s having a hard time starting a conversation or having delayed speech. They may also have limited but repetitive physical behavior, like rocking back and forth or having stiff body language. These are not all the symptoms, but only a few.

Autism is usually caused by genetics. How the gene affects this disorder is pretty broad, as a mutation can raise the risk of autism while some genes can affect the severity of the symptoms or how the brain develops. Usually men are more prone to having autism, especially if they were born earlier (before 26 weeks). Researchers are currently exploring how other factors, like pregnancy or infection, have a direct cause on autism. There is no direct link between vaccines and autism! For more information on that, view the following link:

Every autistic person is different, so it is important to make sure you are patient and encouraging when you communicate with them! Small remarks and praise significantly help them notice what kind of behavior you seek from them. Being concise and clear also helps them communicate easier.

If you are looking to support those with autism or those researching about the condition, there are plenty of organizations that strive to advocate for autism! Below are a couple of organizations that accept donations:
